Answers to Questions: Part 2 {home tour}

Are you going to post pics of your house someday? I’d love to see it! :)

Sure, I’ll give you a tour . . . Our house was built in 1924 and is a bungalow-style. Probably about 1,100 square feet. It sits in an old historic neighborhood in the center of the city where some of the houses have been redone and are super cute and some look like they need to be condemned. I would like to think that our house belongs in the super cute category! While I would love for my home to look like it came out of a Pottery Barn catalog, it probably lacks any inspiration for your own home. It looked a lot better {and cleaner} before we had kids. We have stopped buying any new furniture and decor until we move into our next home.

Since we’ve decided to stay for awhile we are doing a few updates. We put these projects off while hoping to sell but now they’re happening and I’m trying to fall in love with our house all over again. I try to remember how excited we were on closing day! Totally naive to home ownership and ready to get our hands dirty! Surely I can concentrate on the good things about our house instead of always wishing for something better. Be happy in THIS moment, right?

So we’re replacing all the original drafty windows with double-hung, energy efficient windows. So far, they look amazing! We’ve lived in our home for 3.5 years and I have never been able to open our windows. Now we can and it is like magic! I actually can’t wait until fall so we can open all the windows and let the fresh air blow through!

We are also going to put up a six foot privacy fence. We have a nice-sized backyard but the two houses next door are pieces of crap. They are both abandoned so no one takes care of the lawn. We actually end up mowing the lawn because if we waited for the city to handle it our backyard would be covered in snakes. I hate it. I have always hated the view next door. And I’ve always wanted to put up a fence so we can enclose it and make it into a nice little oasis for entertaining and for our boys to run and play. Oh, and for Roxie the pug to play too. Now we’re finally going to get this done. We’re going to buy the wood ourselves and call in family to help. I will post photos when this project is done!

Okay, now that I’ve got that out of the way, here’s a tour with some details . . .

This is our little piece of the world . . .
When we moved in the shutters and door were the same color as the house. I painted them red to give it a bit more curb appeal. I think it really pops!

This is the the main room. It is a combined living and dining space. We have no real “entryway” or coat closet, which is kind of a bummer. Our house is much longer than it is wide.
When we first bought the house there was yucky carpet over the hardwoods. But we pulled that up to find this underneath . . .
It was a big project but so worth it. I love the idea of bringing back the original beauty and character of an old house.
This is our dining room. It is open to the living room so when you walk in the front door you can see it. We recently changed the old light fixture to a rod-iron chandelier. It’s nothing fancy but I love the way it changed the look of the place.

This is the “master” bedroom. I put the word “master” in quotations because I’m not sure it deserves the description. It really is too tiny for such a word. We can barely fit our queen size sleigh bed in there. Ugh. But it works for now. At one point, we turned the bed around the other way to see if it would allow more room but it wasn’t much better. This is with the new blue paint, bamboo curtain and bedding. The shelf holds photos from our amazing trip to Greece. The opposite wall has a painting of Santorini we purchased at an open air market while in Crete. Nice things to wake up to if you ask me.
and just so you can see the difference this was the bedroom before we changed it . . .
Naaman also added a ceiling fan. We both deem it an absolute necessity now. It feels amazing to have a breeze blowing and it has really cut down on our electricity bills in the spring and fall.

This is the newly remodeled master bathroom. It’s tiny so it’s hard to get a good photo. Before we put our house on the market last year we did a few updates. We replaced the disgusting carpet {yes, there was carpet in the bathroom. PUKE!} with laminate flooring that looked exactly like tile. We took down the builder-grade mirror that covered the entire wall and I patched, sanded and repainted the entire bathroom a soothing light blue to match our bedroom. And yes, I did this all while pregnant. It was loads of fun. We found the medicine cabinet on clearance at Home Depot. The added storage is a must because again . . . only two closets in the ENTIRE house! We got the new light fixture from HD too.
This is Landon’s nursery. It’s another tiny room so it’s hard to get good photos of the space. This room is currently being redone because the boys are going to share. It’s some type of beige color and I always thought it was nice so we didn’t change it. It’s neutral, which will help us sell when the time comes.

This is another view of the nursery. Oh, how I will miss the jungle animals. I loved this bedding set! Landon helped me take the monkey stickers off the wall and he seemed sad. Me too, buddy. But it’s time to move on. We used to have an upholstered rocker in the room but as soon as Landon started crawling he needed more room to play. So we put the rocker in the back room and replaced it with this bookshelf. We also put the closet door back up. As much as I loved the idea of a cute curtain he just kept crawling in there and pulling everything out. So the curtain was only a good idea in theory. You live and you learn, right? Naaman bought a small ceiling fan for the boys’ room too so that will go in shortly. I can’t wait to reveal the shared room . . . it’s coming soon :)
Next we have the kitchen. Also small. Notice a trend? The kitchen was a bland beige. I didn’t want a beige kitchen. I wanted a red kitchen. So I spiced it up and got this in return . . .
There are so many things about this kitchen I would change. Honestly, I would gut the whole thing and change the floor plan so the refrigerator wasn’t setting where it is now. The countertops are a lovely green laminate. Seriously, it’s like the color of mold. Who chooses that color? Those would come out immediately and I’d probably get butcher block countertops because I have a crush on them. I’d get a white farmhouse sink and stainless steel appliances. But it’s just not worth sinking a ton of money into a house that we want to sell soon.
The saying on the wall reads “Home is where your story begins.” I put this up before I was pregnant with Landon. Obviously it has rung true. Our story, the story of our family, did begin here.
Our second full bathroom is off the kitchen
This is the “bonus” living space in the back of the house. It was an addition although I don’t know when it was added. This is the room that “sold” us on the house because of the beautiful wall of windows. The use for it has changed but it currently serves two purposes. #1 We keep our computer armoire in this room and #2 A catch-all for all the crap that we have nowhere else to put. The windows are absolutely gorgeous and let a ton of light in but they are single pane glass. It’s so freezing in the winter that you can’t spend any time in this room. And the fireplace looks wonderful but we can’t use it because it’s gas and there is no vent! Who in the world does that? Stupid.
There was yucky carpet in this room too. But since it is an addition there were no hardwoods underneath. Just cement. So we searched for laminate flooring that was as close to the real hardwood color as possible. It looks great and most people who come through think it’s the same thing! But it only cost about $400 :)

Moving to our back deck. Cute little space, huh? But this is really the only part of the backyard we use. You can see how the previous owners put up a divider so you can’t even see the backyard from our wall of windows. I understand why they put that up. To block the view of the houses next door! It’s not a pretty sight and this does hide it. But it also blocks all access to the wonderful amount of yard space. We will take that fencing down and put the fencing up on the other side, along our driveway, so when you open the french door you will see ONLY our backyard and not the neighbors on either side. I can’t wait!

There’s also an unfinished basement. Nothing to see there. I have to go down there to do laundry and I am scared shitless every time I walk down the steps. Spiders, people. Big effing spiders.

Wow, this tour got crazy long. But I hope you enjoyed it! Stay tuned for more answers to your questions!

I love your house! And I love the neighborhood you're in. We looked there briefly but are not handy people and couldn't take on a fixer upper! You guys did great! And it seems like a lot of room for only 1100 sq ft….good job!
