As I previously explained, we decided to nix the big first birthday party in favor of a small family dinner party. Both my out-of-town sisters flew in so it was nice to get to hang out with them for a bit and celebrate the arrival of our little dude. I was worried that I would regret not doing a full throttle party for Brigs but now I know it was the right choice at the time. And there’s always birthday #2, am I right?
We decided to go out to dinner. Yes, with three toddlers and a baby. My family is brave like that. We chose the family-friendly and always fun Buca Di Beppo for the occassion. I love that they serve the food “family” style. This restaurant is actually becoming the go-to place for our family celebrations. One of my sister’s had her rehearsal dinner there. My nephew Harrison’s Baptism celebration was there. And now Briggy’s first birthday party!
They only had one reservation at 4:30 p.m. so I almost didn’t book. But it turned out perfect. By the time our party was sat and the food was delivered it was the perfect time for everyone to eat. With so many younglings along, I’ve realized that you’re on a time table when it comes to eating out. You don’t want the food to arrive when it’s bed time! That’s a recipe for disaster. You have to get in, get fed and get out.
I made sure that the restaurant was okay with me bringing a birthday cake and our own plates and napkins. They said it was fine! So we were ready to party!

His froggy birthday cake! The nice lady at the grocery store insisted on creating it for my original frog theme.

So even though it wasn’t the huge expensive party I had my heart set on, it ended up being the BEST decision to go low key for Brigham’s birthday. Family, food and fun. Lots of love and laughter. It was a very happy first birthday for our Brigham!

What great pics! Sometimes low-key is the way to go. We just had immediate family and 2 close friends for Tommy’s first birthday over for a BBQ. I’m hoping we have a few years before we have to try to find the “coolest” parties to have compared to his friends. As a kid, we had fun just going over to friend’s houses, playing pin the tail on the donkey, having some pizza and cake, and watching them open presents. So much more complicated nowadays!

hi, molly! first time visitor here. i completely respect your decision to nix a huge first bday party… the child doesn’t appreciate a big spectacle anyway… might as well save that money for a fun fifth bday (that was my logic).
anyway, beautiful family! nice to meet you.
