I know I’ve told you guys about my issues with the holidays. I’ve complained about the snow. I’ve relented about the money that has to be spent on gifts. I’ve sulked about the stress it takes to get through all the holiday hullabaloo. But I’ve lied to you guys. I actually really appreciate the holidays (as long as I’m inside where it’s warm). What I haven’t talked about are the joys of the season. MY joys.

Joy is coming home from work, sliding off my constraining boots and slipping a pair of fuzzy socks over my chilly feet.

Joy is as simple as snuggling with my boys under a velour blanket covered with funny looking snowmen and penguins.

Joy is the first fire of the season in our new home. It’s gas but turns on with the flip of a switch. Joy is not making a mess and still having the blue flames ignite and the warmth between you and the man you love.

Joy is opening the mailbox to find your favorite magazine with holiday decor ideas and seasonal recipes.

Joy is turning the ignition, waiting for the heated driver’s seat to warm up and watching the window defrost so you can go home.

Joy is a steaming mug of hot chocolate while writing at 9:00 at night.

Joy is sitting around my parents kitchen table at Christmas, playing board games with my three sisters and laughing when someone tries to cheat.

Joy is the smell of my mom cooking a turkey and stealing a piece before dinner as my dad carves it.

Joy is all these little things . . . and so much more than I could ever have room to write on this blog. So I guess I’m not much of a grinch after all.

Share some of your little joys of the season with me, won’t you?

Joy of making this our first “real” christmas/thanksgiving as “our” family. Joy of making our first homemade ornaments last night of two little hand prints of our additions to our family. 2011 has been a great year, with even more memories to come!!!

  2. Joy is finding the moment…and noticing it. Whatever it might be. That’s my holiday resolution – am I allowed to have those before New Years? Being mindful and present. Even in the busyness.

~joy is turning off all the lights in the hallway and pressing the button to make Papa’s Christmas stocking sing “I’m all shook up” while we dance and dance in the disco style lighting. This will be our third year doing that.
~joy is hearing Gracie call every Christmas tree she see a “Papa tree” because she watched Nathan put it up this year
~joy is knowing that as soon as I unpack the nativity scene, I’ll never see baby Jesus again because both my babies steal him cause he’s so darn cute. And joy is knowing that they somehow inherited that form me, since I used to sleep with our nativity scene Baby Jesus every year growing up.
~joy is teaching my kids and reminding myself that every piece of joy comes from Jesus.
