Starting the New Year off right

A couple of weeks ago I watched a documentary called Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. It was an instant stream movie on Netflix. I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this before but I love documentaries. I rarely watch television these days as it no longer interests me. But I’ve definitely been on a documentary kick lately.

I won’t do a long review of this movie. But if you’re at all interested in losing weight and/or getting healthier, I highly recommend it. It’s all about juice fasting. If you’re interested in hearing more about juice fasting or juice cleansing it’s a great movie to watch. Very motivating! You can also go to the Reboot Your Life website, which talks about the different juicing programs you can choose.

Naaman and I are currently doing a 3-day juice cleanse. I don’t need to lose weight but I desperately need to get healthy. I eat a terrible diet primarily of highly processed foods. When we started our new budget this definitely cut down on fast food but I’m still eating it weekly and I hate it. It may taste good going down but it makes me feel so sick afterward.

Basically, I’m tired of being depressed. I’m tired of feeling sick. I’m tired of having no immune system. I’m tired of having acne that won’t go away. I’m tired of headaches and heartburn and digestion issues. I’m tired of never having any energy and being addicted to caffeine just to help me get through my day. So it was time to do something about it. Nothing like a New Year to start!

I went to GNC and bought this juicer for half price.

There are much more expensive ones but we wanted to see if we like juicing before we invest a lot of money in this.

So basically, we replace all meals with a fresh juice for three days. You heard me. No eating, only drinking. We also need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. This is a healthy way to detoxify and “reboot” our bodies, as the maker of the movie calls it.

We had our first juice yesterday after I stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies.

Carrot, cucumber, apple, 1/2 lemon and 1/4 green pepper. Sounds disgusting, right? Only it wasn’t at all. It was delicious! As is the case with all the juices we’ve been drinking so far. There are a ton of websites with juice recipes. This is my favorite one so far. I love that it lists the ailment and then gives you the ingredients to put in your juice to combat it! I’ll definitely be doing the clear skin juice daily!

So we’re on Day 2 and to be honest, I’m not as hungry as I thought I would be. The worst part is not drinking my usual two cups of coffee a day. I miss it. I am surprised to find out just how addicted I am to caffeine and carbohydrates. But supposedly this detox will help stop the sugar cravings and make me crave fruits and veggies instead.

Like I said, I am not doing this to lose weight. In fact, my only concern is losing too much weight, which is why we are only doing this for three days. This is a way for us to kick off a more healthy lifestyle.

If you have any questions please feel free to comment and I’ll try to answer as soon as I can.

please note: I am NOT a doctor. I watched a movie and did research on doing a juice cleanse, which is not the same thing as a juice fast. We are doing the minimum of three days. If you want to try this and have concerns please discuss with your doctor.

I have been wanting to do this too, with the modification of including my 1 cup of coffee… haha!

  2. I saw that documentary a while back. It was so good! I keep thinking about doing the same juice cleanse, but since I’m breastfeeding I figured I should wait until I’m not. I look forward to reading your updates about how it goes, I’m truly interested!

Has it been helping your mood at all so far, or are you just grumpy that you’re hungry? :)

No, I’m not too grumpy so far. I think because I know it’s only three days helps! I am hoping it will help my mood, as that is a huge problem for me with my depressive episodes. After we finish the cleanse it will be our goal to eat healthier and exercise regularly to boost our moods!

I’m right there along with you — I’m not the healthiest of eaters and I’ve been playing around with the idea of buying a blend-tec or Vitamix. For the last week or so I’ve been making smoothies in our regular old blender. Just a mixture of water, protein powder, carrots, spinach and a ton of frozen blueberries for sweetness. My husband gave up carbs a few years ago and keeps telling me how good it feels…but I’m content with my baby steps for now. Good luck with the cleanse!

Wow, this post was totally timely for me. Thanks!
I will certainly look into that Documentary. And I’ll make Fred watch it with me. He never touches water. Isn’t that horrible?
But no coffee? Seriously, how do you survive? I’m not sure I could go that far.
    Thanks for the links!

I really want to try something like this.
I take so many medications for various things that I get worried about what it’s doing to me internally.
I’ve considered doing it once everything is firing off normally…or close to it :)
